Today we got the honor of interviewing Katherine (Pepper's Human). You can find a direct link to their Instagram here.
Here is their story:
Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a dog influencer? What inspired you to start sharing your dog's adventures on social media?
Wu: It was never our intention to have a following on social media! It started out just as a way to share out our journey with Pepper without flooding my personal accounts with dog content in case people weren’t interested in that. But as we continued to post, the dog community was so kind and welcoming and people genuinely wanted to connect with us and see what was happening in Pepper’s day to day. It became a fun way to connect and share experiences with other dog lovers!
What do you think sets your dog apart from other dogs on social media? What makes them unique or particularly interesting to your followers?
Wu: I don’t think this is just unique to us but we try to always keep Pepper’s content authentic and organic. We try to capture funny day-to-day moments and let her personality really come through the screen. I think our account really shows Pepper’s true self which our community loves to see.
How do you come up with ideas for your dog's posts and content? Do you have a specific creative process?
Wu: It’s a very inconsistent process. A lot of Pepper’s content is us capturing what she already does and then trying to match that to the right sound or song. Sometimes if we see a trend and think it’s relatable to us, we will hop on that trend. Of course if we have fun travel plans or holiday/birthday plans, we always like to share that with our community.
Have you ever faced any challenges or negativity on social media, and how have you dealt with it?
Wu: It can get a little annoying at times but the positive comments always outweigh the bad. We have a strong community that is very supportive. The few hate comments we get are usually baseless and judgmental so we find them relatively easy to ignore. I think it’s important to respect the decisions people have made in regards to their pets especially if they were made thoughtfully and with good intentions.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own dog influencer account or share their dog on social media?
Wu: Continue to put out authentic content that you and your dog find fun and enjoyable. It shouldn’t feel like pressure or a numbers game. We love having a good time with it and sharing out moments that give others joy too.
How has your dog influenced your life outside of social media?
Wu: In very significant ways! She has impacted our social lives in that now we plan many activities around HER social life (play dates all the time!). We also think more about how we can plan out more trips and activities that are dog-friendly, try to discover more dog-friendly restaurants, etc. Having Pepper also has encouraged us to take more walks and discover more parks around San Diego. Having a dog has improved our lives in so many ways!
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or funny moment you've had with your dog during one of your photo shoots or adventures?
Wu: One of Pepper’s signature poses is sitting like a human on our couch with one paw resting on an arm rest. In those moments, we think she truly believes she is a distinguished and classy human.
What is your favorite thing about being a dog influencer?
Wu: Definitely meeting other dogs and dog lovers who care so much about their pets and are also supportive of one another’s journeys. It’s so cool there are people out there who love seeing updates of Pepper and we are so grateful for all those that follow along our day to day!
Lastly, what's next for you and your dog on social media? Any exciting plans or projects in the works?
Wu: Honestly, nothing planned out! We just like to take it day by day and plan on continuing to document sweet moments with Pepper. We do plan to take her traveling with us more around Southern California this year!
