Today we got the honor of interviewing Jessica (Kevin's Human). You can find a direct link to their Instagram here.
Here is their story:
Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a dog influencer? What inspired you to start sharing your dog's adventures on social media?
Fowler: We started Kevin’s Instagram page, @kevthewhip, in August 2020. At the time, I was looking for some sort of creative outlet and being able to do so while spreading the joy and love of pets seemed like the perfect solution. Kev is such a little character and has a lot of personality, so it just made sense to start his own individual account.
What do you think sets your dog apart from other dogs on social media? What makes them unique or particularly interesting to your followers?
Fowler: I think that every dog is interesting and unique in their own way, but I feel that Kev's big personality and sass sets him apart. His acting skills are on point. I don’t know how he does it, but he always seems to know when to add that little extra flair. He seems to think that he is one of the humans, not just a dog. And I hope that this trait carries across to our followers through our content.
How do you come up with ideas for your dog's posts and content? Do you have a specific creative process?
Fowler: I wouldn’t say we have a specific creative process. I like to spend some time researching (aka scrolling through Instagram and TikTok) to see what is trending or what people are interested in at the time. I then try to think of a way to convert the trend or the audio into something that dog parents can relate to.
Have you ever faced any challenges or negativity on social media, and how have you dealt with it?
Fowler: Fortunately, our experience on social media has been very positive overall. I mean, there are always going to be the odd negative comments here and there from people who don’t get your sense of humor. But these sorts of comments are such a rare occurrence that we don’t get caught up on them.
Another challenge can be the urge to compare your page or content to others. This can cause you to feel that your content isn’t good enough or that you’re doing something wrong when you don’t seem to reach or engage as many people as others do. One way I’ve chosen to deal with this is by focusing on creating more original content and remembering that we all have to start somewhere.
There is also the added pressure that comes with being on display as a dog influencer account, but I don’t think that is a negative thing. It simply impresses on us the responsibility and privilege we have in serving the dog community well.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own dog influencer account or share their dog on social media?
Fowler: Be genuine. Don’t get caught up in the likes and follower counts. It’s not about that. It’s about sharing the joy and love of our furry friends.
How has your dog influenced your life outside of social media?
Fowler: Kev has brought so much happiness into my life and has had such a positive impact on my mental health. I wish he knew just how much of an impact he has had in keeping me grounded, giving me a reason to get out of bed every morning and teaching me to take the time to find joy in the simple things in life.
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or funny moment you've had with your dog during one of your photo shoots or adventures?
Fowler: Oh I can’t pick just one! Every day with Kev is filled with funny and memorable moments!
What is your favorite thing about being a dog influencer?
Fowler: Getting to spend time with Kev as we film content together and reading people’s comments and messages about how our content has brightened up their day or had a positive impact on them.
Lastly, what's next for you and your dog on social media? Any exciting plans or projects in the works?
Fowler: We just hope that we can continue to put a smile on the faces of our fellow dog lovers. We also hope to collab with some of our favorite brands in the near future and keep making new friends (or should that be FURiends?) along the way.
