Today, we're privileged to interview Kelsey Johnson, one of the devoted people behind #LovePup Foundation You can find a direct link to their Instagram here.
Here is their story:
What inspired you to start or become involved with this rescue organization?
Johnson: My lifelong passion for animals led me to dedicate over a decade to working with them in various roles. Joining #LovePup over two and a half years ago marked a significant turning point, where I discovered my true calling. The organization's mission resonated deeply with me, inspiring me to pursue further education in training shelter dogs, a path generously supported by #LovePup. This journey has been a cohesive progression driven by my love for animals and the fulfilling work we do at #LovePup.
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable rescue mission or adoption story that stands out to you?
Johnson: Every rescue mission or adoption story holds its own unique significance, but it's the ones involving tougher dogs that tend to stand out. These are the dogs that require extra guidance and training, and when an adopter steps in with the understanding that it will take time and effort for a seamless transition, it truly resonates with us. Their dedication empowers us to continue our mission with even greater resolve, knowing that every dog, regardless of their challenges, deserves a chance at a loving home.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a rescue organization, and how do you overcome them?
Johnson: As a rescue organization, we encounter various challenges, such as finding adopters willing to invest extra time and effort into dogs with specific needs, or facing situations where there are no immediate applications for available dogs. In these moments, our team comes together to brainstorm creative solutions and advocate for these dogs. Fortunately, we're grateful to have a strong network of supporters who help us by sharing these dogs' stories, ultimately helping us overcome these challenges and find loving homes for every deserving animal in our care.
How do you select the dogs that your organization takes in, and what criteria do you use for adoption?
Johnson: At #LovePup, the selection process for the dogs we take in is overseen by the owners, JohnJay and Blake Van Es. We accept various types of intakes, including owner surrenders, medical cases, dogs on the e-list, and strays. Our adoption process involves an extensive application form that provides us with insights into the potential adopter, enabling us to assess whether the match is suitable for both the adopter and the dog they're interested in. This cohesive approach ensures that each dog finds the right home where they can thrive.
In what ways do you work to rehabilitate and socialize dogs before they are adopted?
Johnson: Last year, our shelter manager, Kelsey, embarked on a training apprenticeship aimed at enhancing the understanding of our staff and volunteers regarding dogs and their individual needs. This initiative has been instrumental in our efforts to rehabilitate dogs requiring special attention. We employ various strategies for socializing our dogs, including weekly run buddy sessions, enrichment activities, participation in programs like the What Dogs Want Academy, and other tailored approaches. This cohesive approach ensures that each dog receives the necessary support and training to thrive before finding their forever home.
What role do volunteers play in your organization, and how can people get involved?
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization, assisting with shelter duties and events on a daily basis. Their dedication and support are invaluable to us, and we are continually grateful for their contributions. If you're interested in getting involved, we welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and skill levels. To apply, simply visit our website at LovePupFoundation.org and fill out an application. We look forward to welcoming you to our team!
Can you share some success stories of dogs who were once in your care and have now found loving forever homes?
One of our success stories involves Zeke, a dog who initially exhibited behavioral issues such as resource guarding his toys and territory. Despite these challenges, Zeke found his way to an incredible family who fully embraced his needs, enlisted the help of a trainer, and provided him with the love and support he needed to thrive. His transformation is a powerful testament to the fact that dogs from any background deserve love and can undergo a complete turnaround when given the chance.
How does your organization collaborate with other rescues, shelters, or animal welfare organizations?
Our organization fosters collaboration with other rescues, shelters, and animal welfare organizations through initiatives like our annual #LovePup Family Fest. This event serves as a platform for shelters to come together and facilitate adoptions for their dogs. Its success has led to expansion beyond our local area, reaching states like Texas, New York, Oregon, Colorado, and beyond. By joining forces with like-minded organizations, we're able to amplify our impact and help even more animals find loving forever homes.
What initiatives or programs does your rescue have in place to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent pet homelessness?
At our rescue, we have several initiatives and programs in place to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent pet homelessness. One such initiative is "It’s Hip to Chip," where we provide microchips to all dogs adopted at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control. Additionally, through our "A Dog is Forever" program, we assist families in keeping their beloved dogs by covering the costs of medical care or providing behavioral assistance when needed. Another cornerstone program is our "#LovePup Family Fest," an adoption event organized in collaboration with iHeartMedia and Johnjay & Rich Syndication Affiliates, where we invite all rescues in the community to participate. These cohesive efforts enable us to make a meaningful impact in reducing pet homelessness and promoting lifelong bonds between pets and their families.
Looking ahead, what are your organization's goals and aspirations for the future?
Looking ahead, our organization's goals and aspirations for the future are twofold: to continue our mission of saving dogs and providing them with loving forever homes, and to expand our outreach efforts to support other shelters and advocate for their needs. By staying committed to these objectives, we aim to make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of animals in need and contribute to creating a more compassionate and responsible community for pets everywhere.
