Looking for your new pup? If you’re thinking about getting a mixed breed, take a look at the Brittany Spaniel mixes. They’re great for hunting or as a family pup.
What is a Brittany Spaniel Mix?
Have you ever heard of a Brittany Spaniel mix? Maybe you've never even heard of this breed. But if you're looking to adopt a brand new puppy to add to your family, mixed breeds are definitely the way to go! There are tons of shelter dogs who need rescuing. They're way cheaper to purchase than a purebred. And actually, they could be healthier.
Although the hope is that the breeder you might use is very reputable, and does genetic testing to make sure they aren’t passing down hereditary diseases, there are definitely people out there who don’t check for those things.
And if you’re mixing two breeds together—all things being equal—you’ll have a greater chance of breeding out those hereditary diseases. However, if you can find a responsible, reputable breeder… you can actually find breeders that will make designer dog breeds.
“Designer breeds combine the best of both worlds. Registered, pure dog breeds are ‘mixed’ on purpose to create designer breeds. Intentional mixing of breeds optimizes the best characteristics of each parent.” So if you love the Brittany Spaniel, and you love the looks and traits of another breed, you can actually seek out someone who ethically and professionally breeds these two dogs together for a nice mixture of both.
What is a Brittany Spaniel?
But wait, first things first. What is a Brittany Spaniel? The American Kennel Club describes their personality as bright, fun-loving, and upbeat. This dog is a part of the sporting group because Brittanys are great hunters. They weigh about 30 to 40 lbs., can be 17.5 - 20.5 inches tall, and can live about 12 to 14 years.
This pup has a beautiful white fur coat with patches of orange and reddish-brown. “The face has the 'softness’ prized by bird-dog lovers; high-set ears convey the breed's essential eagerness.” Brittanys are high-energy and ready to play. Let’s keep digging into their fun personality to see if this dog breed or breed mix is the right breed mix for you and your family.
Is a Brittany Spaniel a Good Family Dog?
The answer here is yes. A Brittany Spaniel or a Brittany Spaniel mix would be a great addition to any family! They are very smart and very trainable dogs. They are good with children and other dogs, and affectionate with their families. Their fur coat only needs a moderate amount of care. And they are decently adaptable.
As I mentioned above, these are very high-energy dogs, and they need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. So even if you're not the hunting type, you need to make sure that this pup gets plenty of outdoor time, and doesn't get too bored. Otherwise, just like any other dog who needs more mental and physical stimulation—they could demonstrate some unwanted behaviors with their extra anxious energy.
A great way to help with this is by having a fenced-in backyard that they can frequently run around, sniff, and hunt in. But that alone might not be enough. Try taking your Brittany Spaniel mix out for frequent walks and jogs. Or even try taking them for a hike. They will love the exercise and all of the great smells from the critters in the woods.
Do Brittany Spaniels Bark a Lot?
Because Brittany Spaniels are hunting dogs, they do have a moderate barking level. Depending on the breed you mix them with, they shouldn’t bark all the time. However, if they are outside and get the scent of their prey, they will probably start barking to alert you of what they smell or see.
Are Brittany Spaniels Aggressive?
Every individual dog is unique, and has their own personality pros and cons. Some of these will be based on their natural breeding. And some will be from their training or life experiences. While it is possible to have a Brittany that is aggressive toward other people or animals, the typical Brittany Spaniel is not known for being aggressive. They are actually moderately open to strangers, and only moderately protective in nature.
